Check the essentials before a new commitment.

Begin with the current position

Write down the current provider, minimum-term end date and whether a phone balance is separate. Establish who owns the number and who has permission to change it. A new SIM order does not erase an old agreement.

Check the intended phone

Find the exact model and regional variant rather than only the product family. Verify compatibility, supported calling features and physical-SIM or eSIM requirements. Plan how to keep account recovery available during setup.

Check real-world reception

Use the official postcode checker, then consider indoor conditions and the places you regularly visit. A recommendation from someone across town is not a test of your home. Where available, read the terms of any trial or return period before relying on it.

Read the complete schedule

Record initial and ongoing payments, any disclosed changes, minimum term, extras and what happens when an introductory benefit ends. Keep device and airtime obligations separate. Compare the same time period and level of service.

Prepare the number transfer

If retaining a number, use the appropriate PAC process and follow the receiving provider’s instructions. Avoid cancelling the old line first. Test calls and SMS after transfer, including services that use messages for account access.
